Brigid's cross...

which adorns this page, is an Irish symbol that possibly derives from the pagan sunwheel. It is usually made from rushes or, less often, straw. It contains a woven square in the centre and four radials tied at the ends. It was traditionally believed that a Brigid's Cross protects the house from fire and evil. Brigid's crosses are associated with Brigid of Kildare, who is venerated as one of the patron saints of Ireland.

Her feast on 1 February coincides with the more ancient one of her pagan namesake, Ireland's most important Goddess, Brigid, who is associated with fire; it signifies the beginning of Spring. The Celtic Festival is
Imbolc, which is a cross-quarter festival, the complement to Lughnasadh (Lammas) on 1 August. Both festival are associated with fire. [Wikipedia]

Brighid is the goddess of all arts and crafts, and as such she is the feminine principle of the Ildanach, the counterpart of Lugh (celebrated at Lughnasadh or Lammas) and together they represent the potential of all of us to develop and shape our world.

The Northern Irish folk group La Lugh have songs about Brigid – and are worth listening to!
